This is where the rubber meets the road.
Are you doing magic for other magicians or
for ladies that like to watch good magic?

What is the difference? In his he touched
the cards to make a coin travel. In mine,
the coin traveled without being touched. The
moves are exactly the same but the effect
is totally different; from her point of view.
Bear in mind the difference is in the mind
of the audience. Magician's see both as the
same trick. To them, the magicians, one is
more interesting.

Several Levels of Differing Views
Right now my only point is that what you as
a magician see and what your audience
sees are two drastically different things.
This strikes at many levels. As just
demonstrated, the actual effect you are
performing is at risk of two differing points
of view. Another level is about effective
communication. From a magician's point of
view what is being said and done is very
clear. From the audience point of view, all
may be unclear and confusing. Ego
perspective is another level. Is the
performer out to get strokes or is the
performer out to see the audience has a
good time?

To focus on the content of this article, the
level being addressed here is about those
magicians that feel that performing the
same effect several times but more difficult
or different each time enhances their
performance. I disagree with this.

Same or Different?
Let's make it clear what the argument is.
Many magicians believe that when doing a
routine in which the same effect is to occur
several times, each event can be done
different to enhance the overall
appearance of magic. I believe in such
routines, each event should appear
exactly the same from the perspective of
the audience.
