Let's consider some suggestions about what you can do to build interest before you do your first magic trick.
First, consider how you dress. This depends a great deal on your style. Some people can wear clown costumes or other unusual dress. If you wish to dress normal, you would be wise to purchase a book on dress. There are several around. All of this means shoes shined, a good hair cut and clothes pressed. When the audience first sees you that kind of quality says you are serious about whatever is going to happen and you will have interest.
Chances the next thing the potential audience will be aware of is the way you speak. Whoever you are, polite speech will rule. If you use good English you will begin to win quickly. If you are working close-up you have an opportunity to engage an individual with an interest getting question. Ask a lady, "Are you one of those people that are aware of things others cannot see?" Almost everyone believes they are and will be anxious to prove it.

There are things you can do even before you get close enough to talk to your audience. Little tents on tables for close-up work can build interest before you even appear. A large picture of you at the entrance can let people know what is going on. On the few times I did walk around, I carried a top hat with my props in it. Anyone from a distance could see and hopefully wonder what it was all about. Perhaps the best thing you could do is walk up to a table and get them laughing or applauding. The other tables will wonder what is going on and want to be part of the action. Those tables will not have a clue what happened. For all they know you walked up to a table and told them you would buy everyone at the table a piece of pie if they applauded.
Most of my performances were not done in a walk around environment but in a room isolated from the main party room. My method to build interest was to do good
