Clearly, building interest is difficult to accomplish. You essentially try to do it. Then retry when something doesn't work. Some things stand out however. First is that to build interest in your magic; simply do good magic. This has several meanings. One can, "Eliminate the bad stuff." Another is that if people see other people interested, people will be interested. Then, have you thought of your interest in the welfare of the audience you are performing for. Clearly, if you are interested in them; chances are they will be interested in you. Finally, if the following items are done well, interest in your magic will increase.

Level of Impossibility The Level of Impossibility should enhance the interest of your audience. I am somewhat amazed that magician's will present a choice of four objects claiming they have written a prediction and put it in an envelope that hangs on the curtain for all to see. Having a random chance of one out of four to be right does not seem to me to be amazing. Now, contrast this with the Brainwave effect. In this a deck of cards is shown to the audience. They are told that there is a card reversed in the deck that is a prediction. The audience is asked to name a card. The deck is spread and there appears to be one card reversed. It is the named card. This is amazing and remains one of the significant pieces of magic today. The issue here is that predicting one out of fifty two is more amazing than predicting one out of four.
That is, the more impossible the effect, the more amazing. Producing a coin during dinner is one thing. Producing a one pound block of ice during dinner is an entirely
